Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics by highlighting the cracks with gold — built on the notion that by embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger more beautiful piece. Kintsugi translates as “golden joinery,” in Japanese. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to conceal or discard. There should be no attempt to hide or disguise the flaws. Every break is unique, and instead of repairing an item like new, this 500-year-old technique actually celebrates the breaks as part of the object's history.
Uplifting and hopeful, Kintsugi is an inspiring metaphor for dealing with the times we feel broken in life. It's a reminder to find the gold to mend ourselves and appreciate our so-called flaws. This is a fun and inspiring 2.5 hour hands-on workshop where you will learn to repair and embellish two ceramic pieces in a modern version of Kintsugi. Instructor Luis Santiago has been teaching decorative finishes and traditional crafting techniques for years when he discovered kintsugi and saw how its message of resiliency, self compassion, and renewal can help others through troubling times. Luis enjoys teaching workshops that impart a more significant meaning for people to continue to benefit from even after the workshop is over.
